STEM: Women In The Workforce

As technological advancements continue to make waves in the world, it is nurturing the heavier promotion of STEM within our educational system. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math are taught together in order to encourage more people to get excited about these subjects. Particularly, there is a target for women to learn STEM to get them excited about building themselves up and making moves on what once was a male-only dominated field.

It's not uncommon to see more and more women in the technology industry. Programs promoting this growth are making gains every year. Hawaii has a statewide workforce initiative known as Women in Technology. The focus is on STEM in order to raise awareness and identify the various jobs that are available within the industry. It has created a STEM job shadow/mentor program to help female students understand the incredible opportunities that exist.

CAREERS IN TECHNOLOGY

There is a rather large and growing number of jobs that women hold in the world of technology. Emphasizing the importance of women in tech, there is even a website dedicated to featuring jobs for women in the industry.

Software engineers, directors of technical systems, data management specialists, IT infrastructure consultants, and the list can go on. The goal is to show that women are just as much of value to be hired in the technology industry with equivalency to men. Many companies are also looking to branch out and hire more women in order to improve diversity within the workplace.

Some of the top contenders involved in hiring more women into technology include Apple, Hewlett-Packard, FedEx, Symantec, Dell, Comcast, and General Electric. Every year this list continues to expand.
 

GETTING AN EDUCATION

Before anyone can enter the workforce, they need to make sure that they are getting a solid educational background in tech. As a result of STEM now being of high focus in the educational system, it's becoming more abundant to witness a rise in female students earning technology degrees. TOP WOMEN IN TECHNOLOGY

It's inspiring to see so many different women who went forth in breaking down the walls of technology. The women of then and now that are currently out there making a name for themselves; being an advocate for women in technology around the world.

Ada Lovelace  is considered one of the first computer programmers and is ultimately responsible for helping computers become what they are today.

Katherine Johnson  worked for NASA. She was involved in helping plot the flight paths for several of NASA's earliest space exploration expeditions. Due to recent events, you might recognize her story from the Hollywood blockbuster Hidden Figures. I highly recommend this movie if you are interested in some women in tech empowerment!

Grace Hopper  is identified as the "Mother of Computing". She worked for the Navy at the Harvard Computation Lab. She programmed a computer that helps to bring accuracy and speed to many of the military's initiatives.

Adele Goldberg  was a researcher at the Xerox PARC throughout the 1970s. Her work is what gave Steve Jobs his inspiration to create what we know as the first Apple computer.

Karen Sparck Jones  was a computer scientist. She implemented natural language processing in order to lay the groundwork for Google and every other search engine we've come to know.

Joan Ball  worked at Harvard with a group of men who were creating a computerized dating service. However, she is the one that helped to establish compatibility using the computer.

Carol Shaw  was the first video game designer and programmer who is female. Her claim to fame was creating River raid in 1982, though she also contributed to 3-D tic-tac-toe and video checkers.

These women are only to name a few of the countless other women who have disrupted the industry.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, women in technology were almost unheard of. However, this doesn't mean they didn't exist in the industry back then. Women were there, in the shadows, slowly but surely making their mark on society.

Even though it is still a mostly a male-dominated industry, there has been a significant increase in the number of women knocking on technology's front door. In today's world, there is a high demand and desire to break down the barriers that have kept others from joining in on the success of such an imperative and booming industry. Developing and nourishing an environment of diversity will do nothing but help technology flourish into bigger and greater things. Opening doors to a new world with greater STEM initiatives.
